I think your second point is the basis of my bones of contention with you. I don't have a problem with "questioning" authority. I have a problem with the epidemic in this country of having no faith whatsoever in authority, or better, the institutions on which any representative republic rests. You and I can't conduct the investigation into the election, or into the Russia affair, or into the investigation into the investigators of the Russia affair. We elect representatives, and there are institutions charged with things like these investigations, which answer to the representatives we elect. And in the end, we either accept the verdicts of these institutions as a country, or the country travels down the road to collapse.

Trumpism exploited and exacerbated this, to the point that it becomes backwards reasoning - I don't believe most Trumpies would be "questioning authority" if the Durham report gave them what they wanted. Since it didn't, it just becomes another part of the Deep State. Trump and his supporters couldn't accept the election loss, and although an entire multitude of courts threw out every single contention (save maybe one about where observers can stand), since the result is not what Trumpies wanted, they simply cry foul and storm the Capitol to illegally prevent the ceremonial certification by Congress. Why were these people not questioning authority when it was misrepresenting the VP's role in that process, and what the process itself even is?

We have a very long, proud history of questioning authority in this country. The press is the primary tool for that, but of course when it dares question the authority of Donald J Trump, it becomes the enemy of the people. I don't believe Trumpies are about questioning authority - I think they are about getting their way or crying "we wuz robbed!" Nothing more.
